In Ethiopia, disability doesn’t just change a child’s life — it changes everything around them. The silence that follows isn’t indifference. It’s shame. And it falls hardest on the mother.
Mothers find themselves isolated — not just from resources, but from their own communities.
Without income, without childcare, and without anyone affirming that their child’s life has value, the weight becomes unbearable.
Tikuret exists because someone saw that weight and refused to look away.

Own
Home.
Sister Asayech grew up in Addis Ababa. She trained as a nurse and a sociologist, and she believes God called her to serve people with special needs, orphaned children and the poorest families.
So she started where she was. She took in one child. Then she opened her own home to children and families in crisis. When support became uncertain, she sold that home to keep the work going.
Today she leads Tikuret on the ground in Addis Ababa, alongside the doctors and coordinators who carry the work with her.

From Caregiver to Craftswoman
Melkam’s son Amanuel lives with Down syndrome. For years, caring for him left no room to earn. She earned a craft through Tikuret, and now she covers his medicine herself.

Dinke has three children, two with disabilities. For years she chose between medicine and food. Now she earns through her own work, and she doesn’t have to choose.

For a mother in Addis Ababa, 4,000 ETB a month isn’t a paycheck.
It’s the first time in years she’s been able to plan. To breathe.
She earns.
4,000–8,000 ETB a month (about $25–50) from the handmade work she makes in the Income Generating Activity program, as much as her time and her child’s care allow.
A sponsor walks with her.
$100 a month (about 16,000 ETB) goes straight into her family’s bank account for food and shelter, medical care and therapy, her child’s schooling and her training.
She plans ahead.
With the basics covered, she can save. When she’s ready, some mothers start something of their own: baking injera, preparing spices, making more to sell.
The goal is a family that stands on its own within two years.
